89th Oscars- Is this the best year for black film so far?

29th February, 2017

Lets not kid ourselves the 89th Academy Awards will be remembered for years to come for its unfortunate but exciting mix-up drama at the end but having said that, it did turn out to be the best year to date for Black film, surpassing the 2002 best acting wins for Denzel Washington and Halle Berry, after what can only be described as decades of institutional racism in Hollywood.

Of the record 12 nominations received, black films took home four awards. Moonlight took the top award of Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay, while Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali walked away with best supporting role awards; however it is important for us not to get too carried away or rest on our laurels, as there is still a huge amount of work to be done on diversity in the film industry.
