Our research at Talking Drum Entertainment has always told us there is a huge global market for black films with 44m African Americans plus another 40m mixed and multi-race in the USA, a billion Africans in Africa and 5 million black people in the UK, the numbers have always been there, now we are beginning to turn those numbers into one of the fastest growing segments of the global film industry.
This year the Nigerian Film industry (Nollywood) pitched in with exciting features like B for Boy, Flower Girl and the soon to be released Half of a Yellow Sun starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton, South Africa give us the Mandela Biopic ‘ Long Walk to Freedom, iNumber Number and the very controversial ‘Of Good Report’ but most of the buzz has come from recent global smash hits such as Fruitvale, Think Like a Man’, ‘12 years a Slave’, The Butler and Best Man Holiday with white audiences confounding critics by turning out in large numbers to watch black films as stated in the
