Straight Outta Compton the groundbreaking hip-hop biopic about the group N.W.A did even better at the North American box office last weekend than Universal originally estimated.
Produced for just $29 million it beat the Universal predicted weekend box office estimate of $56.1 million to come in at an impressive $60.2 million.
The film fronted by Ice Cube and billionaire impresario Dr. Dre posted the best-ever opening for its director F. Gary Gray. It also surpassed other rap movies like Eminem’s 8 Mile, which came in at $51.2 million in 2002 and Notorious, the story of Notorious B.I.G., which opened to $20.5 million in 2009.
The film now stands as the fifth best August opening ever, narrowly beating M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs, which opened to $60.1 million in 2002.
